Poem #23

December 7, 2009

I am almost home,

I thought I was done.

I am too tired to go on,

But I have come too far,

I need to get home and out of this new world.

I am on my way home,

All is complete,

All is done.

It feels like I am flying,

Like a big weight has been lifted.

December 7, 2009

It is hard to stick to a plan

That you know will be hard to complete.

There are times when you just want to give up

And not follow that plan

But in the end you know you will.

It is time to get back to the grind stone.

Break is over,

Play time is over,

The real work lies ahead.

Time for break.

It is time to sit back a relax,

Spend time with family and friends.

This is a much needed break,

This break will help me get through the semester.

In this class so far we have read four books that all relate to each other in one way or another. Everything in this class so far has gone back to the things that we have learned in the first week or two of class. That has never happened to me in any English class that I have ever been in, that includes elementary school, high school, and college.

Every book that we have read so far in class can be related to each other in one way or another. The four books that we have read so far all have characters that can be related to the characters in the other books. Celie from “The Color Purple” and Penelope from “The Odyssey” are a lot alike. They both are the stereotypical women. They both do all the stuff around the house for their husbands and children. The only difference is that Penelope is waiting for her husband to come home from a war that ended twenty years prior and Celie is doing it out of fear of her husband beating her. There are many other characters that are very similar. Another way they all relate is that they all have journeys in them that follow the monomyth.

I never have had an English class that relies on what we learned in the first week or two of class. The monomyth is something that we learned in the very beginning of this class and it is still present in the material that we are going over now in class. We also learned about the archetypes in the beginning of this class and now we are still describing the characters from the books with them. I think that this is a very good thing because it makes us as students have to learn the material that was taught at the beginning of the course and throughout the class.

It is almost thanksgiving.

It is almost time to give thanks,

To give thanks for family, friends, and good fortunes.

This is the time of the year when we all should be with those who care about us,

And those we care about.

The book “Middlesex” is a very confusing and boring book in my mind. I think it is confusing because it jumps around a lot. It will go from one place to another place and from one time period to another and relatively quickly and with little warning. It has a plot that is also not that interesting to me. I am the type of person where I like to be able to picture some action in a book or a movie. This book is not that type of book.

The book would be much less confusing if it changed places or time periods at a logical place. A logical place would be maybe in the next chapter and not in the middle of a chapter. This would make it much easier to follow. If it is hard for the reader to follow then how is the reader going to stay interested in the book? The answer is they are not going to stay interested in the book and that is not being a very good author.  A book needs to have a logical order that has to be followed so that the reader can know what is going on in the book.

The basic plot of the story is not very interesting to me at all. I do not see it being interesting for many other people too. The plot is about someone’s family history and how they reproduced with other family members and that is why the narrator/main character is messed up biologically. That is not something that is a very interesting topic for anything let alone a five hundred some page novel. I have no idea how this book won the Pulitzer Prize at all. A better topic would be how the main character’s biological deformities affected his life at home, at school, at the work place, in relationships, and other things along those lines. We do not need to know this person’s family history of inbreeding.

The book “The Color Purple” is a book that shows that people can have many different dominate and non-dominate archetypes. This is shown by how the characters have different sides to them. Celie is the main person that shows this change of dominate archetype the most. At the beginning of the book and throughout most of the book Celie was the quiet one who did exactly what she was told to do even though she didn’t want to do what she was told to do. At the end of the book she stood up to her “husband” and said that she was leaving and that she wasn’t going to put up with him treating her like a piece of shit anymore. This is a major change in Celie’s personality and dominate archetype because her archetype changed and it did not change back to the quiet innocent person she was at the beginning of the book.

Shug shows that she has more than just the side of her where she is being a little bit crazy. I mean she has more to her than just her crazy lifestyle of singing on the road and being a sexual deviant. She also has a softer side. She shows this when she reunites with her father. With the way her personality is and the way she lives her life you never would have been able to tell that she was a preacher’s daughter. This also shows that she went from being a preacher’s daughter and “a good girl” to living the lifestyle that everyone knows her to have and being “a bad girl.”

Sofia also changed a lot. She went from the woman that would kick a guys ass to a very quiet woman who just wants to be with her family. This all happened after she spent time in jail. She went to jail for hitting the mayor’s wife when she wanted her to work for her. When she came out of jail she didn’t even think about violence or hitting anybody. This was a big archetype change, from worrier to the orphan. She became the orphan because she didn’t really have a relationship with her children and she didn’t want to lose their love or lose them in her life.
